Ancient Scythia

SCYTHIA

  • The name of the territories north of the Black Sea with its adjoining steppe zones in the period 7th – 1st century BC. The vast territories between the Danube River delta and the Don River with the Crimea peninsula and the forest-steppe zones were inhabited by Scythians, or tribes close to them concerning their ethnic composition, language and culture.
  • After the Sarmatians conquered Scythia in 3rd – 2nd century BC the northern coast of the Black Sea was called Sarmatia.
